Top 5 Reasons People DON’T Start A Podcast

 

 

Are you one of those people who would love to start a podcast but find the whole process stressful and overwhelming?

I recently put a call out on social media asking if people were interested in starting a podcast, what was stopping them.

The engagement was crazy but there were 5 clear reasons why they weren’t starting one.

Podcast awareness is at an all-time high in Australia … Before we get into those reasons, did you know “more than one in two podcast listeners claim to listen to more podcasts last year compared to 2016. Weekly podcast listeners who claim to listen to at least five hours per week rose from 37% in 2016 to 44 percent in 2017”. (Source: radio.press.abc.net.au)

What does this mean for you as a business owner? There are so many benefits to podcasting … More reach and more ways to get in front of people so you can show them how you might be able to help them.

Ok, so on that note, let’s take a look at why people DON’T start a podcast.

1.  It’s too technical – and it is technical

Most of us don’t learn how to use audio recording equipment and software when we’re learning how to use computers. People often get put off by the visual of audio software but once you learn a few key skills, it really is a matter of practice and once you know HOW it not so scary.

2.  Equipment and software

There are so many microphones, which one should I buy? What software do I need? What else do I need? Ask for advice and work out what you need to get started.

Often you’ll change and refine things along the way but you could literally start a podcast for free using equipment you already have and free software. Just be aware that the key here is to ensure good quality audio.

3.  I have no idea how to get my podcast on to Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes)

This one really astounds me because I also used to wonder how on earth this happened. But trust me when I tell you, it is one of the easiest steps in the launch process.

You also need to submit your podcasts to other providers such as Stitcher Radio so that people with Android devices can listen to your podcast through their podcatcher of choice. But this is really straightforward as well.

4.  Not knowing what to podcast about

This seems crazy when you think about how much knowledge everybody has in their head. If you’re really stuck about what to podcast about, come back to the purpose of your podcast and then think about things that you talk about to your clients and customers. A great place to start is listing out your most frequently asked questions.

5.  Last but not least – imposter syndrome

One I know personally. Imposter Syndrome activates the same centres in the brain as pain. Not surprising that so many people find this completely and utterly terrifying. And throw in there that they don’t like the sound of their own voice!

There’s only one thing to do here … and that is to just start. Get it out there and you’ll learn and improve along the way.

And remember how many people are getting on the podcast bandwagon. Think about all the people you could be in front of, think of the people you will be helping and then think of how a podcast could introduce your business to the world stage … or merely just get you a few more clients (depending on your goal!).
